How's it an optical illusion? Light hits the atmosphere and is dispersed/separated, and the blue light travels along the atmosphere, making the sky blue. That's roughly my understanding anyway
Edit: unless you mean how the sky has no colour as such as it's created by the aforementioned effect?

This. Which is hardly an optical illusion, by the way. Terrible phrasing on my part.
And not remotely true, the sky has every right to it's colour even though it's not a very dense object.
There's not actually anything up there, that's blue though...

Exactly, the sky doesn't really have a colour, hence being able to see through it at night, but is given one in the daytime by the refraction of light. How is the sky defined though? Seeing as it's not really there and it goes away when the sun goes down Is it the atmosphere or just an effect created by it?
Getting a bit deep for a morning tread now

So, a neutron walked into a bar and said "I'd like a beer, please."
After the bartender gave him one, he said "How much will that be?"
"For you?" said the bartender "No charge."
