Looking at getting one as a run around/stop gap while i save up for something better/newer.
Seems to be some good ones about, have looked into insurance, mpg etc and the golf has scored well
Anyone owned one before? Anything to look out for etc?
The one i have in mind has 103k miles
12months tax
Just had turbo internals cleaned, new rear brakes.
Thanks in advance to those who reply

Missus had a 2001 GT TDi, was great. Few minor electrical issues with the alarm system and central locking but nothing major with about 135k on it when she sold it. Over 50mpg regularly

I've got one.
Turbo has just gone because the guy I bought it off never got the internals cleaned.. I did get the stuff you buy to clean it out, but it'd gone too far.
Apart from that it's fine, the interior light works when it wants, and the doors sometimes don't want to lock with central locking..
But, 55+ MPG!!

My dads had a Y reg GT TDI 115 for about 6 years now. Never had any problems with it, goes real well.
Just had the cambelt done as its hit 100k.
Flown thru every MOT since he's had it.

I have a 2001 110 tdi.
Had nothing but problems for the first few months. New flywheel, turbo boost issues (sticking vains), front bushes, rear bushes etc.
I have worked through em, and its alright now but it has cost me a fortune. The next owner will think its a brilliant car though as everything has already been replaced!!!

Cheers Richc
The chap im potentially buying it from has had this done:
New stainless steel pre-CAT flexi pipe - welded in pre-MOT to replace the original which was frayed and blowing
New lock module in front passenger door (common problem with microswitches)
New replacement window regulator clips both front doors (common problem fixed)
New battery - early this year when it was cold
New rear axle bushes - 2011
New rear coil spring - 2011
New rear brake pipe to replace corroded original - 2011
Turbo cleanup - internal - 2011
New alternator, belt and pulley - 2010
New starter motor - 2010

Dont know if its just me but I would be wary of a turbo clean up trying to mask clogged up nozzles in the VNT turbo.
Car will whistle loudly when on boost and go into limp mode due to this, either replacement turbo or have innotec cleaner sprayed into it or remove, strip, clean and rebuild turbo. I could be wrong though and turbo could be brand new, or the clean up may have cleaned it enough to get by and could always crop up again?

I have the 115bhp 6 speed model Y reg, Ive had the car nearly two years and clocked up nearly 20k miles in that time and all that has to be changed is the power steering rack because the seals leak?? and tyres which is wear and tear. Great cars! If you know the former keeper and you know it has been looked after then even better.

I got a GT TDi 130 on 127k regular services and all is good.
55-60mpg going to and from work.
Remapped to 175bhp and plenty torque.
