What are people's thoughts on them?

My living room currently has a modern but traditional style fireplace. It's quite nice to look at but it's quite cheap and never gets used.

The room is quite big but not particularly wide. I can't help but think that getting rid of the fireplace will make it feel bigger.

Are there any good reasons why I should keep it? It's not like it's an old house and the fireplace adds to the character or anything....

The current fire is currently outside of the wall (if that makes sense), it is just fitted up against the wall. So if I went for what you are suggesting, I would have fit some kind of false wall, which would defeat the object of trying to make the room feel bigger....

persoanlly always keep a fire place or have a fire

There are always times when you can just heat the room with the fire rather having to have the central heating system on just to heat that room

They are also a nice feature

It's just an electric fire though, I've not used it in 18 months of living there, plus it's noisy and probably uses loads of electricity when it's on.
