This is kind of related to my fireplace thread.
If I rip out the fireplace, obviously I will have a gap in the carpet. I have some spare carpet that matches the existing stuff. Will a good carpet fitter be able to stitch in a bit, or will I need a whole new carpet?

A decent fitter will be able to do it. The only problem you get is you will know it has been done. So you will notice it more 
Plus colour match, the fact the older bit has been patted down etc.

It's going to be under a TV stand anyway, so it's not going to be a huge problem. The carpet is relatively new, that's why I wanted to avoid replacing it if possible!

I fit carpets for a living, it can be done but depending on how long the rest of the carpet had been fitted for any colour shading etc will stand out like a sore thumb because the new piece that's been filled in I'm assuming wouldn't have any had any wear...
Depends on how fussy you are, I'd advise you just to go and price up new carpet... A decent fitter will want £50 to patch a bit in and there's a good chance you won't be happy with it.
