We've acquired one of these in work 
Am I being stupid in thinking it should come with some sort of utility software with templates etc... for printing the cards? All the CD has on it is drivers and support software.
If not is there third party software that does this type of thing?

No, its just like any other printer, you need to use specific software to print to it.
Most of the software that runs access control has the card printing software built in as it pulls the data from the user databases with variables etc...
Paxton Net2 has card printing software and I think they have a lite version which is free.

I should have known that, Paxton is pretty much all we use for access 
We have all the Paxton software here, cheers
