Thanks mate. They got back to me in the end. They said travel insurance that comes with car hire ('collision' cover) usually covers it. If not they have some levels of cover starting from $49 (I think, may have been $99).

Done pretty much the same thing, slightly different stop offs.
LA, Palm Springs, Lake Havasu, Grand Canyon, Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite, San Fran.
Still one of my best trips I've done. Lots of driving, but lots to see and do.
Tip: Yosemite. From Death Valley you can go north over the mountains via 2 routes. The shortest is frequently covered in snow. Added 4+hrs to our trip time that day. Once you've got to that road, if its shut, you need to go even further north. South route is meant to be pretty boring though. SO find out in Vegas in advance the condition of the road if you can.
Ours was 2 weeks, and tbh it wasn't enough, few days in each main location, but really needed to be 3 weeks to take it all in properly.
You will have an epic time.

Been half heartedly planning this for us next year but three things putting me off:
1) can't really spend any money until my house sells and we move
2) cant find a route which we both can settle on which allows us to enjoy each stop off.
3) I think I want to do Florida, again!
I can see us just going back to Florida for two weeks on a last minute flight. I say "just", but we fucking love it!

I've not long been back. Absolutely brilliant. The nightlife is fantastic . Would recommend Tao nightclub in Venetian and Marque in Cosmopolitan.

LA sucks, but theres some theme parks that are quite good. The beaches are empty though. Long beach has the Queen Mary birthed up that you can go on.
If your into natural things, then the canyon caverns are a good visit.
When your going to and from the Grand Canyon, you'll join at Kingman onto Interstate 40. Carry on through Kingman and you can go on a stretch of Route66. About 20 miles or so the Caverns are on the right. Google map "Grand Canyon Caverns" and it'll show the route, you will re-join Interstate 40 again after. Will take a few hours to do.
Route 64 up to the Canyon sucks, its single lane each way, and if you get caught behind cars it takes ages. Our run up was good, but the run back took ageees.
Book the Helicopter for the Canyon!!!
Also, head to the west end of the canyon to watch sunset over the canyon itself, pretty cool.
Vegas rocks. We used the "heres the budget for the night approach" . Go up the Stratosphere, has a few good rides at the top, especially the one that rocks over the edges, also the one that spins. Go early evening/sunset and watch the sun set from the tower.
Death Valley, baron! Take water
Take time at Yosemite, theres some good walks, and they all take a different amount of time so you can work out what ones you can do. The big one up the huge rock there is a whole day jobbie. Take mossie spray, we had millions of the buggers. In 30 min wifey had about 35 bites, she was in pain/itching for days after :S . Stunning place though.
San Fran is mega as well! So much to do/see.
Theres such a variant in countryside is awesome. Sandy beaches, desert, the Canyon, snowy mountains (north route into Yosemite from Vegas), then lush forest and waterfalls, then back to San Fran.
