Specifically asking for SBS 2008 but from what i understand it's the same; the in-built Windows Backup, am i right in that using an external drive it'll consume the entire drive for the backups and you can't select individual partitions?
From what i've read the destination either has to be a network share or a drive and NOT an individual drive partition but i can't find anything that 100% confirms this.

I've not actually tried it with a partitioned drive but I do know there are 2 different ways to do it.
You can either let it use the whole drive, in which case it does something with it and you can't see it as a normal drive letter, or you can just store backups on a normal drive.
The second option I assume would work with a partition, I'd have to try though because have never done it.

Maybe i'm being retarded but it doesn't appear to allow me to select a partition, just the whole disk (which it wants to delete and 'hide') or if doing a 'Backup Once' then a network partition 
Yup, keep getting -

If your interested, I may have a genuine ~2011 Symantec backup exec licence if you want it?
We've moved up to the newest product so not using it.
Absolutely hate anything Symantec, but its the industry standard.

Ran shadow protect trial and it is pretty decent but unfortunately i haven't been given the go-ahead to buy a license due to cost - the reply i got was "well if it can do it for free then why do i have to spend £300"

TBH I use the command line tools with windows server backup, much more flexable, multiple jobs etc.
