So she must have had some understanding otherwise she wouldn't have got that right?

Also 'kind of taken' isn't really a great assessment technique. As I say, that should really be assessed elsewhere if you want a proper answer on someone's ability.

Although that does look to me like she actually knows what is going on but when asked to do it verbally either doesn't want to or can't actually make a congruent case for what she has in mind. Which is very common.

Just to add my tuppance, im a highly paid (willy ) finance analyst with 3 professional accounting quals and I can barely use a calculator

im the opposite i cant do maths without a calculator/excel.

Im very good at adding and subtracting in my head, otherwise im useless

Algebra is used loads in banking/finance.

Probably also in engineering.

technially im not an accountant these days so isnt a huge issue but youd be surprised at the prevalance of poor maths skills across the industry
