i found it easier if there were 2 people doing it. One holding the strut the other using the spanners to twist in oppo directions to release it.

compress springs
undo with a windy gun - very simple way - ya wont have much luck getting it off with a spanner

compress the spring, use a ring spanner for bolt and a 6mm (maybe 8mm) for the top bit, turn in opposite directions m8 using the force! works for me

to do it by hand you need a 18mm ringspanner with a bend in (took us 2 hours to find a shop that had one) and an 8mm or 6mm spanner.
bit of brute force and jobs a good un.
if they're stuck then garage's air gun thing is easiest way.
