love my macbook, I've maxed out the ram and got an 128GB SSD in it and it's fantastic. Don't think I'd bother with an iMac myself though.

I have been looking at the iMac for a month or so. For me i ether i'd go for the bog standard 27" or the higher spec 21"
I feel the £250 difference is worth spending for the larger screen.
There will be plenty of YouTube videos in the next few months on how to upgrade to an SSD.
I'm not sure i want to spend £1250 - £1500.

Did you notice any difference from the standard RAM (I assume 4GB?) to whatever you maxed it out to?
I have 4GB in mine at the moment and the same size SSD, just wondered as fairly recently I had a customer get me to upgrade her MBP to 16GB and although it didn't have an SSD, it didn't seem to make much difference to what apps she was running?

I have 16GB and 500SSD but i did them at the same time. So the SSD is giving me the better performance. Plus iirc i dont think apple support 16Gb yet the board does

It showed the 16GB up in System Profiler IIRC, but it just didn't "feel" like it had that much RAM if you see what I mean.
Was running Lion as well.

as an iMac owner, i can proudly say, dont waste your money
Care to elaborate?
for the money it cost, you can build (or buy) a dream pc that will enable you to do a whole lot more. If you really need it for key programs (video/music/picture editing) then they re fantastic machines, if you have the money to waste on one, they are worth having, they hold there value well when you come to sell it too, so much so i think i could still clear a grand for my 2 year old version. They are beautiful, and integrate really well with other apple products, if you have an iPad, an iPhone and an apple tv it makes owning them a pleasant experience, i've never had a virus (although i am careful with the porn i watch). If i had the lump of cash in my hand again, right now, i would buy the cheapest laptop/desktop i needed for my requirements and use the cash for something else i need, if you need nothing else and want to treat yourself, then you cant go wrong

Yes it shows up but you go to apple the max they say it can be upgraded to is 8Gb the board is capable of 16 and the OS can see it. i think older ones caused heat issues with 16gb in

What were you thinking would happen with 16GB of RAM though? It's not going to give it the ability to get up and grab you a cup of coffee on it's own. It'll only use the RAM it needs, adding more isn't going to make it miraculously better.

Well she was using iMovie and I think Final Cut Pro as well, these were the only apps I checked out the extra RAM with at the time.

It'll help with pre-renders/previews and renders but day-to-day task won't really push 16GB. Tbf, you should now push her to get you to do a SSD upgrade

Standard was 2GB, I've had 4GB in it as that was the official maximum, but I've just managed to put 8GB in and it's lighting quick but then the SSD really helps as well. Just a shame my slow ass internet is letting it down now.
