Problem is this lad wants 20k for his, 2k more buys you a non CAT car, that ain't cheap!

Generally I'd say a CatD car is worth say 30% less than a normal model? Sounds to me like he's spent far too much getting it back on the road and wants topish money.

I think he wants that much money as its got some high end mods to go with it. Personally I'd rather an RS4 but like you say Alan another few K and you can get yourself a straight example.

TBH eck I think people are getting confused with this example and CATD cars in general...

To make things clear, I own a CatD RB5 impreza which I'll be selling soon. I haven't felt the desire to spend any decent amount of money making it 'Better' as it will always be a Cat car. I didn't think this would bother me but it did so I wouldn't own another. That's my view on Cat cars.

This M3 IMO has been overspent on, granted if it wasn't a registered car and this work had been done and it came out 5k less than buying a similar spec then that's amazing, BUT so much work has been done that in the end he wants near enough the same amount as a straight car. He's defeated the object of buying a 'Cheap' CatD car.

Where's a good place to start if you're looking for a cat D? Been looking on eBay and seen a few, but I've seen people linking to website which specialise in salvage too but can't remember their names.

There's a CATD E46 I was interested in recently.

Don't see the issue myself. It's a metal object you drive. If you're worried about the joneses knowing you bought a cat d. Don't tell them

My car was a cat d when i bought it then i crashed it again on a track day double d now!

Each to there own but stupid comment really. Working in a body shop I've seen cars repaired by insurance that are worse than some write offs.

Some cars could be Cat D needing a few bolt on panels, some cars could have had a full front/side/rear end etc and been repaired by insurance and sold one with no-one knowing what so ever.


Well it's not a 'Stupid' comment really.

If you read what I said again it comes from my personal opinion. I wasn't slating cars that have been repaired. What I'm saying is it doesn't matter how good the repair is it will always be a CatD so will always be worth less and put off potential buyers. Now if there was away this M3 could be taken off the register due to the standard of work then that's a different story. If he's happy with it then fine, I wouldn't personally spend that kind of money on a CatD car.




Hence why I said "each to there own"

End of the day, your car could have been T-boned at a junction and repaired under insurance, exactly how a Cat C/D would be repaired, but as its under insurance you wouldn't know as it would be HPI clear.

I agree with you, it's not cheap enough for me to buy a Cat D, which I have no problem doing aslong as th price s right and the repair looks decent

But an M3 of that spec and mods would fetch over 25k
