It's about time: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2247833/Is-end-road-tax-disc-Scrapping-paper-version-cut-costs-streamline-services-motorists-say-ministers.html?ICO=most_read_module
Basically they're scrapping them as all reminders and fines are automatic, and so there's no real need to display it. Also to save money on paper

They'd be better scrapping road tax if they reduce the cost to tax transport.

They should scrap tax all together with the state of the bloody roads and the amount we pay for fuel!

It's not road tax, it's vehicle excise duty. Nothing to do with the roads.

Yeah but without tax you can't drive on the road, so why should we pay for example, 120 odd quid (based on a 2.0) for 6 months to drive on roads that f**k our suspension and wheels!

we should adopt the scheme where you basically buy a new numberplate each year with tax stamped onto it. it's fully displayed then, it help prevent problems around it as there will be a centralised dept and in other country's, it just simply works.

look up the word excise in the dictionary!
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

Really? I've never looked at a car and thought it would look better without a tax disk.

I completely agree with you, but it isn't road tax.
My new car is tax free for the first year of registration then £20 a year after that. If it was a road tax then it wouldn't be free.

Saves us buying tax disc holders.
And stops balding middle aged men buying metal ones because they think they are cool.
