Hi there I'm wondering what people think is the best option on this I was told by the guy at carbon mods that its best to use 2mm carbon but he is bound to say that to make a better sale? Would 1mm be suficiant? Think 2mm might stand up 2 much from the roof?
I've been quoted 80 quid for 2mm x 480mm x 880mm
Also

Would 2mm Perspex be strong enough ? Any thicker would definatley look stupid. Although this only costs 12 quid so would hardly break the bank

Opinions? Pics?

Cheers,

Ste

1mm ally here, weighed in at 500g, cost nothing as it was an offcut. Not worth paying for cf imo.

If I'm going for carbon it will be real just not sure on thickness ally won't work for me because the cars flame red and slightly faded roof so it won't colour match right and would look daft

You could leave the ally unpainted. Either way it looks daft to an extent because it's a compromise but you can pay 80 quid for it to look daft and be slightly lighter or pay a lot less for ally which still saves 14.5kg compared with the 15kg sunroof and fits neater than a 2mm lump of cf. I just don't see the cf as being value for money in this scenario. As for perspex, my windows are 3 and 4mm (off cut bargains again hence the difference) which would look even worse plonked on your roof because it makes it even more obvious.

I'd be using alu - strong, light and cheap.

CF or perspex don't do as well for all three.

I'm sure mine was 1mm...

Really can't remember - looking on Carbon Mods, I think it was the 500x950mm Wet Lay single side gloss - it still needed trimming down though as was too wide - it was around £60 when I bought it, looks to be the same sort of price.

Mine didn't really sit proud of the roof.

I think the total number of Rivets I used weighed more than the CF sheet...

So it comes within about 10mm of the gutter, can't remember but that ensures there's enough room for sealer.

I'll be able to beat there price on carbon fibre, think I've got a sheet at the unit which will do your job.

1mm will be more than strong enough if you rivet it all the way round.
