Had a problem with the D: drive randomly filling up, even though it's the recovery drive.
Decided to clean upgrade to Windows 8 however its still full:
Do I need to put W8 on a disk/USB and clean install it that way?

Yeah you need to fuck the recovery partition off completely!

Yes people keep telling me to just use a program to delete it and extend the C: drive but won't I need it if the laptop goes tits up?

If you intend on selling the laptop in the future with the factory install, yes.

Probably not tbh, it's a 4 year old Dell but can guarantee at least once a year it will die out the blue and I have to reinstall everything from scratch.

Nuke the partition and then either create backup discs or clone the drive and keep that in case of emergencies.

Or just buy a bigger hard drive and keep the factory partition and restore setup as-is on the old drive

I've still got 75gb free on this, don't need another HDD.

Think I'll do this, if I do a full clean install of W8 tonight by burning the ISO to a disk rather than just updating, will this completely format both drives?

depends on which options you pick. By default it probably won't.
You will need to delete your existing partitions and create a new single large one.
No need to reinstall though. Just go into Computer Management then Disk Management, delete the d: drive, extend the c: drive and jobs done (might be called something different now in Windows 8)

If doing a fresh install with disc's windows will allow you to shrink/delete and then extend the partions before installing but must do it from boot and not once booted.
edit: Doing it from boot = booting the computer with the disc drive as the primary boot (which many are as default)

Deleted D:
Formatted C:
Clean installed windows 8, everything fine only C: is still 218gb so looks like I lost the 14gb that was the D:, ah well, no annoying message.

This is what it looks like now, have I messed it up
Edit, managed to get rid of the unallocated space and extend the C: so just got the one drive with all the space on now.

Yes
You had two separate partitions before, with your C: drive on one partition and your D: drive on another.
All you have done is simply format both partitions and installed Windows on the first partition, leaving the second one empty.

You want to now resize the C: partition adding the unallocated 14.65GB; although during reinstall it would have been easier to have removed all partitions and then create a single partition of 236 odd GB.

The 'remove' was greyed out as part of the install for some reason. Sorted now though (I think), glad I went back and sorted it out, it's like me to just leave it. Cheers for the help.

Loving windows 8, my 4 year old laptop now boots up in about 6-7 seconds and shuts down almost instantly.

Out of interest where did you get the windows 8 from?
I've been looking at upgrading from windows 7 but don't fancy paying to upgrade
