Looking at one of these, the 2.5 TDi SE 6 speed. Just need something that is comfortable, reliable and economical. The one I'm looking at has 180k on it too, would this be anything to worry about? Has been serviced and had timing belts and bottom pulley replaced.

my dad has a 2001 A6 quattro 180sport, had a remap he had it now 6 years has put a foot wrong , bloody quicky especially from 60- 90 nothing can accelrate like it. he gets 33-35mpg tops when driving very carefully. i would look at the 2000 shape you can pick one of them up for less with less miles.

When I said economical I meant over 30mpg, but still....
Will take a look at the newer shaped A4 and A6 then. To be honest I had a '96 A4 before and it was the worst car I ever bought. Just loved the look of the old A6, but after hearing a bit more about them I think its best avoided.
Cheers folks.

Loved my 1998 2.3 V6 A4! Felt really solid if a bit wollowey in the corners never missed a beat and sold it for what I paid for it.
Plus I got 30mpg around town. I'd stick with the 1.9 an remap it.
