Is the email he's using actually re-branded GMail (Google Apps?)? Why would you want to use IMAP over the web client???!
I seem to have this conversation over and over again with people when I set them up on Google Apps - I just don't understand the use of desktop email clients unless you've got an Exchange server and Outlook up and running.

It is better, but some of our sites neither have the budget, nor hardware to run an exchange server

A lot of people are too familiar with outlook so even with google apps, still want outlook.
