i use mathcad with a trial licence, works fine if i load into windows through bootcamp but not if i open the partition in vmware. says theres a licence issue.
anyone got any idea why?

Are you opening the actual bootcamp install in vmware? or do you have a seperate instance of windows running in vmware?

The licence key will be related to various bits of the hardware, when you open it in vmware this hardware will appear to be different. It'll basically look like you've taken the hard drive out and installed it in a new machine.

Is it student mathcad that you can activate more than once?
If so possibly install it again to a different folder and activate the vmware one separately.
That might not work at all though.

Depends what the key is checksuming on might require hardware elements to bind the key to client / hardware config.
As John says try a new key on the VM build
