Does anyone on here work as a project manager? I am considering over the next couple of years a career change into project management. I am looking to do a few courses that are distant learning but could anyone recommend ones that are best and which to avoid?

I've heard Prince2 courses are a good one to go for? Are there others that go alongside?

Also noticed that Prince2 Foundation course is currently on groupon for £199. Is that worth a look at or pointless?

Just do prince 2 don't expect to jump into a pm job though.

I expect you'd need to get some project engineering type experience before hand, ie. working as part of a project team under the direction of a project manager. That's the kind of position I'm in at the moment en route to becoming a project manager. This is coming from an engineering background though, but I can't imagine it'll differ greatly from other industries, at the end of the day any company would want to see what experience you had working on projects...

Project management in the construction industry?

If so I would say you'll struggle to get a position without any previous experience. You'd be looking for positions as an assistant site manager and working your way up from there.

Any course that you can go straight into, when you aren't even in that line of work, needing no previous qualifications, almost certainly won't get you a decent/any job.

Prince2 is alright but it teaches you the Prince2 methodology so is completely pointless unless you go into a role that uses that methodology.

It depends what industry you want to be a PM in, but as (I believe) you have zero experience in any kind of project-based environment I think you will struggle.

You could try and get PMO/Project Assistant role where you basically be assisting a number of PMs. The salary will be terrible though.

But as VT mentions, you want to look at junior roles but if you want to really make it and progress far, expect to work really hard, long hours, working lots in your own time (taking work home, writing RAMS etc) taking a lot of shit from a lot of people, all whilst earning next to nothing to begin with.

I've changed careers last Christmas and became a project manager, as above what industry do you want to look at pm-ing in? I did a mechanical engineering degree 5/6years ago which touched on pm bits, no other pm qualifications.

Best choice I made work wise.

Project Managers at my place started as bench hands and worked their way up.

I'm a IT Project Manager and Programme Manager.

Prince II + experience, the latter is more important if you are able move into a PM role within your company and get the qualifications later

Do you have any experience working in the construction industry, if the answers no I really wouldn't waste your time considering a specific PM course as most positions would require some form of construction management degree

I work for a house builder and tbh experience is what you need.
Try and start off as a trainee/junior and work towards an assistant site manager, then on to a site manager.
