I get what you mean. They won't be legal if its the standard 7 digit size.

i can confirm that im getting rid of my small plates.

ive changed J3 XJH to J3X JH. the plate is the same size as the seat above. had the plate on 3 cars and not been pulled for about a year.

however, i recieved a letter through the post TODAY stating my car has been clocked with these illegal plate (not a leg to stand on obviously) no news of a fine but i have 28 days to get the standard plates back on or face my plate being seized.

not just that, but when i was pulled over last year for them i had to pay a £60 fine. i was told by the rozzers that it would double to £120 if caught again.

lesson learnt i think, im getting rid

So the letter is because of the illegal spacing rather than the size of the plate?

The plate on the leon is legal.

As long as the letters are legally spaced you can put any sized plate on.

ben its not legal. my plate is exactly the same bar the spacing and all the police did was list what was wrong with it. a standard plate has to have:
1. standard font with no messing with the spacing
2. a bar code so they can trace where the plate came from
3. and it has to be a standard sized plate and not cut down.

r.e my previous post. ive got 28 days to return to standard and send back photographs to the DVLA for proof. plus i have to send a link of proof of where i bought my small plates from so they can clamp down on it.

3 is incorrect.

The legal spacings are available. Just has to have a certain margin basically, plate doesn't have to be certain dimensions.

as john said, and as kyle-t told me.

the plate only needs 11mm margin between standard sized digits and the edge of the plate. therefore, if you have a 5/6 digit plate then the overall plate size will be smaller than a normal 7 digit plate.

this is half legal, in the sense that it has the 11mm margin, but doesn't have the postcode on it.

this is illegal as it doesn't have the margin, nor the postcode.

this is legal.

obviously whatever you have, the spacing will make it more obvious that it's illegal, which is where the issue lies.

I'm tempted to put a cutdown plate on the front of mine... but don't want to attract attention!

I was once told by a traffic copper that they don't have an issue with plates that don't have the BS marks and what not. As long as the font is correct, and it has the legal spacing. Purely just for ANPR reasons.

Why bother. If the plate is shit enough to need to illegally space or adjust it then its not worth owning . I think they look shite and tacky. That's why decent plates come at a cost

ANPR can read most 'normal' fonts.

We had ANPR here ages ago and it picked up letters and numbers off the back of signwritten vans.
