Well, I'm very annoyed that I'm having to write this.
I had a momentary loss in concentration in the final mile of the 250 that I've covered today and I accidentally went through a crossing a little too long after the lights had turned red.
There are no doubts over whether I triggered the camera, it was dark outside and two very distinct flashes went off  I also may or may not have been slightly over the 30mph speed limit as well, not too sure about that one though.
The crossing seemed clear so it certainly seems to me like I wasn't putting anyone else in danger, 8.30pm-9.00pm on a Sunday isn't exactly a peak time lol.
Tried Google but most results that come up are about the US, not UK.
Basically what should I expect? £60 fine and 3 points within 14 days? Or is it true that someone reviews the red light camera tickets and it is up to their discretion whether or not they think I deserve a punishment?
Do the cameras only check the red light infraction or do they take speed into account too?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Some cameras check both, but i'd have thought you'd only get the ticket for one. Ultimately, it depends whether or not it went off for speed or the red light offence. But £60 and 3 points either way.
And its not down to a single persons discretion. For the speed, it will be down to the Police force policy as to what their limits are (i.e. 10% +2mph etc). If you got caught for the red light, then theres unlikely to be any discretion.
You have to hope that the camera had no film in or wasn't working properly.

My sister-in-law did exactly the same and her letter said they would only give her a fine and points for one offence if she accepted it.
If she tried to fight it and it went in their favour she would receive points for both.
So I'm afraid your likely to get some points.

If its the speed you got caught for, and you're only just over the limit you might get lucky and get offered a speed awareness course. £80 to pay and no points.

Hmm well I think the cameras are grey, not yellow painted so I'm hoping it'll just be a red light check and not speed too. Suppose it's just a waiting game now.
Annoyed with myself but I suppose it's just one of those things, I know I'm not a bad driver. Just wish it was a fine and no points, nothing I can do about it though I guess.

Only two weeks to wait though, so not all bad. I've managed to be careful for the last 5 years, then managed to get caught by two different cameras within a month, once on the bike, once on the car. Both just before Christmas though, so hoping i've got away with them

There is loads of dummy boxes in red light cameras so I wouldnt worry too much... Also if its there for red light activations it will not be measuring your speed

Ive been flashed a good few times by red light cameras, once I went through on red no questions asked, next time I slammed on and put my front 2 wheels of the line, I watched it flashing out the back window, just kept my foot on the brake so my lights where on in all 3 pics, and the last time I did nothing wrong at all, again I was turned round watching it flashing through the rear window
never heard anything from any of them

I think they check your speed but only to see how fast you went through, eg if you rolled through at 2mph then it was a mistake compared to if you flew through at 50

Technically, it will be measuring your speed as the red light bit doesn't go off below a certain speed.

Well thanks for the responses everyone. Time will tell, finger's crossed I get away with it. Just the threat of a fine and points is enough to make it a lesson learnt.

Well got it through in the post this morning.
'Failing to conform with the indication given by a red traffic signal.
Apparently the red light had been on for 1.8 seconds when I went through it! :s
Not proud of that, I was very tired and just froze when the amber light came on. No other traffic around so no one was put in any danger, that's not an excuse though. £60 and 3 points coming my way then.
Lesson learnt.

Ran a quick quote exactly how I have it at the moment and the same but with the offence and it knocked it up by around £50.
Once it gets properly processed I'll inform my insurers and pay the extra. Was expecting it to be worse to be honest.

Don't believe you have to tell them until renewal time. I could be wrong mind.

I assumed you'd have to let them know as soon as it's been processed. Just like a modification or change of address; they've quoted you based on your current circumstances, if they then change you have to notify them.
I'll look into it though.

Same applys to accidents etc. Didn't effect my premium until the following year.
