I think the point you missed is that they implied the range was more limited than it actually was.
Either way, anyone who mistakes Top Gear for journalism is a fool, so that part isn't the real issue.
The real issue is with a supposedly trustworthy news outlet fabricating a story to support their views and getting caught doing so.
