My x16xe is producing blue smoke, but only when I let off the accelerator and the revs drop about 300rpm. It also does it on idle when the car is hot. Also, when coming back on the throttle there is also a bang before the smoke
I fitted new rings 2000 miles ago, and the stem seals have been done. What else could be causing this smoke?

Will most likely be valve stem seals, when you let off the intake goes into a high vacuum which will 'suck' the oil through the inlet stem seals.

I've heard people having problems with pattern stem seals not lasting, and fitting genuine ones have been fine.

Cheers for the reply mate, hopefully it sorts it when I put the better head back on, but the head that's on it now never produced any smoke whilst it was on the other engine so I'm confused?

Can't be stem seals as I kno the ones on this head are fine :s

Rings or Stem seals. Did you run it in properly when you did the rings and what oil do you have in at the minute?

It was run in for 1500 miles, first 20ish miles were bad ones though as the car had a horrible misfire due to a knock sensor problem

Valve stem oil seals mate. Mine had exactly the same symptoms as yours. Smoked on idle if you left it long enough, then chucked it out when you pulled away, and on over run. Swapped the head for a fully rebuilt one and its been fine ever since!

the guides are more prone to wear on the small block xe's due to the thinner stems.

are the plugs oiling up or are they ok? any chance a stem seal may of come off?
