I thought you were allowed to tow a trailer if you passed after 97 as long as total weight wasn't over 3.5 tonnes that's the tow car the trailer and whatever on a trailer

Would need to know more about exactly what you did, its not simple enough to just say one thing is illegal or another is not.

Is it illegal for me to tow on a bar? I'm 24, no trailer licence, passed test in 2007.

No. You can tow with a Baron a motorway but have to come off at next junction.
Wouldn't worry about it. I towed a mk1 golf from south Wales to mine on a bar

45 miles on a rope is illegal, no two ways about that one, ropes, bars, dollys and a-frames are for recovering a car out of a dangerous situation, they're not meant as an everyday towing option. Saying that, they're always 'mis-used' I regularly see AA and RAC vans that are obviously recovering vehicles back home with a bar or a dolly when by law they can only take them to the nearest safe place, so yes it was illegal but it's a law that doesn't appear to be enforced to anywhere near the extent that it could be. If VOSA got onto you though, it could well be a different story.

if you passed after 1997 you can only tow a trailor upto 750kg.
If the car has al 4 wheels off the floor then it is illegal.
if you have a dolly and only the front 2 wheels are off the ground then the car you are driving and towing cannot be heavier that 3.5 tonne, it counts as one mass. everyone can tow using a rope or a bar but not motorways etc etc.

Also wrong,
A dolly is only for recovery. Any trailer over 750kg all wheels need to be mechanically braked, dollys don't do this.
You can tow a trailer of any maximum authorised mass,
As long as, the mam of the trailer is less or equal to the kerb weight of the car, but the mam of the car plus mam of the trailer must be 3.5t or less.

I towed from Santa Pod to Kent, 110 miles
Just always wondered if it was allowed
