What do you want to play? Try overclockers or on ebay theres loads that will build you what you want. Ive just got a gaming laptop acer plays everything i want. 8gb ram 3.12 intel i5 (turbo boost) 1gb nvidia card. Everything ive played has played smooth and good quality i have it on med-high settings aswell

I really only play FPS or RTS like C&C and company of heroes type games.
I got a pc built years ago from pcspecialist but that was around £1200 and dont want to spend that money again. i did sell it 5 years later and got £400 for it so not all bad.
Any other ideas on tech?

Look on scan.co.uk for their daily deals, or their bundles.

C&C if I remember correct don't need a massive spec. Which C&C do you play?

You are best off asking on overclockers, they'll spec you something good.
I've a decent spec PC minus a graphics card as nothing I do is graphics intensive.
For £500 I got....
Gigabyte Z77-D3H motherboard which allows you to overclock the processor (currently running at 4.2Ghz) and your usual stuff like PSU, CD drive etc

That has a £20 graphics card in it that will never play anything, they're designed for media use/flash games at the most.
Have a look on Overclockers UK, they use proper hardware, not cheap and nasty stuff. Plus their customer service is beyond fantastic!

Mine was about £800, you could cut costs in places or sales etc.
Mobo: Asus P8Z77-V PRO
CPU: i7-3770K 3.50(4.0)GHz Quad core
Graphics: GeForce GTX 660ti
Ram: 16gb Corsair
HDD: 128ssd and a 3tb hdd
plus the usual bits, case, fans, psu etc
Runs everything I can throw at it so far, all games on ultra settings with no frame drops. I found it a good compromise between price/performance.

Don't look at memory on a graphics card, it means NOTHING at 1gb and above in this price range.
Ok the 6450 is more like £30, but it's the lowest card in the entire 6-series range.

AMD FX-4130 Quad Core CPU (3.80GHz/4MB CACHE/AM3+)
I'd rather Intel, but thats a personal choice,
4GB SAMSUNG DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz (1 X 4GB)
For the sake of a few quid get at least 8gb.
2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 660 - 2 x DVI, HDMI, - 3D Vision Ready
Look at the price difference between the 660 and the 660ti as the latter performs much better.
