Although I was looking to spend a bit more than you for exactly the same reasons (she is 3 weeks old now), I shortlisted the A4 S-line, 3 Series MSport and Mercedes C Class.
I have experience of all 3 and I was led by looks and basic specification in the end - the A4 won for us. Went for a B8 petrol 2.0T as the miles Lisa travels didnt warrant a diesel.
