Missus starts Uni in September and needs a new laptop.
Doesn't need to be anything special as she is shit for breaking things like these so cheap and cheerful would be ideal as i will inevitably need to buy 5 or 6 of the cunting things in the long run.

Probs best to at least do some effort and find some cheap ones in your budget then consult here to see which is the better of your chosen list, rather than it being so open ended. In reality any off the shelf laptop is gonna be able to handle office, which I assume is basically what she'll be using, plus browsing porno.

I'm lazy
Anyone have any experience of the Chromebooks? Would they run office or are they out and out web browser machines?

ChromeOS (as Alex said, it's based on Linux but it's stripped down and fully integrated into Google services); depending on which make/model you get you can install Ubuntu but that's about as close as you're getting to Windows.
Dell would be the obvious choice and obviously have a look on HotUKDeals. As said though, it'd help to give us a budget!
