1997 is the year that Daft Punk's first single and album were released in the UK Dom, hence my comment.
I'm familiar with earlier French electronic music too. I had Magic Fly by Space on vinyl, as a child, long before that, as well as Oxygene by Jean Michelle Jarre. I have a couple of Jean Michel Jarre albums from the following years too.
I also have Moon Safari by Air from roughly the same time Daft Punk appeared over here, which, unlike Daft Punk's effort, I really like.
I think it sounds amazing as well as being a nice relaxed, laid back album with an eclectic mix of songs/tunes across it.
I don't hate French Electronica/House. Just Daft Punk. I don't think their silly name helps their cause much either.
