Admittedly this was a retweet from @UberFacts on Twitter, but it said using your phone whilst it's charging damages the battery hence why new charger cables are short.

Any truth in it?

Have used my phone a fair bit whilst on charge and never noticed any changes in performance!

Shorter cables probably just save them 1p a go!

With older technology batteries it may have affected the life but it's mainly rubbish with recent (past few years) phones.

Depends on the battery type but the basic answer is yes.

A full charge has a number of stages, firstly high initial voltage in which current draw will rise as the charge is taken, then when current draw converges the voltage will drop off for a trickle stage.

If you draw current while that is going on, you introduce mini charge cycles which affect the ability to battery to fully charge and discharge.

Not sure if there's much data on it and whether being a user who frequently does it or never does it would appreciably affect the lifespan of the device but the principles are correct.

It'll also produce heat and while the dangers of damage through overcharging etc. are largely managed by the charger, its also safer not to have it next to your head while its being charged.

Stick phone on airplane mode because it charges quicker. Less searching for a signal.

Why not just switch the whole thing off in that case?

Dont have to wait on it shutting down or starting back up by doing it the airplane way.

I do the same every night to save battery. Starting the phone up is reasonably CPU, and in turn, battery intensive.

Regarding the OP and li-ion batteries, i've always been told/read that you're suppose to do 'shallow' charges rather than continuous charging and keeping the battery topped up as that hinders battery performance. Similarly, you shouldn't continuously discharge and charge as it places a lot of stress on li-ions.

Edit - Quick Google threw this up - http://phys.org/news/2013-04-memory-effect-lithium-ion-batteries.html
I always assumed there wasn't a memory effect with li-ions......

What if you just left the charger in and booted it whilst you were getting ready or somethin?

I leave my phone on airplane over night so that i can use my alarms and i know if i left it on 5% i would wake up and itll still be on 5%. I get up and whack the charger in. If i started pissing about turning it off etc i would be late for work probably.

My phone is strange. Sometimes when it is charging on my non-HTC charger at the girlfriends the phone goes really laggy and the touchscreen barely works
