I'll be doing a lot of motorway miles and need a new cruiser.

I've been looking at BMW 5 series , and they seem to tick all boxes

What you think ?

Can get them for 6k, (80,000 miles) though.

Fuel consumption (urban) 26.6 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 45.6 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 35.8 mpg

Opinions?

Don't buy a 4 cylinder one, they're painfully bad on fuel.

I'd go for a 525d, 180-200bhp standard, 260 with a remap and loads of torque.

So so much better long distance than a 3 series too.

Not my personal opinion but I looked at E39 VS E60 comparison and a lot of people on forums are saying that early E60 aren't very good in quality etc. 6 pot diesel is a must though.

Agree with Robin too. 5 series is way better cruiser than 3 series (E46 VS E39).

I love my E39 and this is my second one.

Can't say that Robin. The 3series police will be in here saying that swb small cars are far more comfy than large saloons.

I find my tourer very comfy for doing miles in, only a 320d but its great on fuel.
Comparing an e39 to an e60, having owned both at the same time the e39 (m5) was a nice place to be, felt a bit dated in comparison to the e60, build quality of the e39 felt a bit better but if it came to it I think the e60 is a better car especially when specd properly.
As above get the 6 cylinder diesel in the 5, but don't rule out a 3 series especially touring

talk about twisting things.

Robin has said that its better over long distance, thats due to the size and chassis of the car amongst over things.

You said that it was a 'nicer place to be' because it was a bigger cabin, completely different angles to the aforementioned. As what was said last time, I feel an F10 3 series is a nicer place to sit than an e60 or an e9X.

On topic Robin is right, go for bigger power.

Wrong colour and wheels on that, I'd love a 5 series myself though.
