I got a warning message on my laptop saying I'll get better life out of the battery if I charge it fully then use it on the battery till low and repeat, rather than run off the mains all the time.

However sometimes I leave the power plugged in over night and during the day when I'm not here.

Is that good for the battery or do I need to get into a habit of unplugging when not in use?

Another option is to take the battery out if it's going to be plugged in for long periods of time.

I've heard the same, but my use is completely random. Sometimes it's plugged in for days, other times I'll be going through the cycles.

Two years in and it's still as good as the day I bought it.

Surely you're better off leaving the battery in and the charger doing it's thing while working near a power outlet? Laptops have their own power management systems so will use the charger to power themselves while plugged in while keeping the voltage topped up on the battery.

See since I've had my Vaio I took the battery out and used AC all the time, as I heard, if you leave it plugged in with the battery then it'll mess the battery up and have less battery life when come to use it without the AC power. Not sure how true that is but I've never risked it.
