10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 are internal addresses not avaliable on the internet. the 169 range is supplied by the card if no DHCP is avaliable. (also not avaliable on the internet) These are standards set by the International Network Standard.

lo = loopback 127.0.0.1 (localhost), no network card needs to be present... look in ur lmhost/hosts it has a higher priority than dchp/dns to without a lo ur not gettin far. depends if you have NAT enabled on ur firewall/router then internal machines can be contacted via the external ip

I don't really understand the relevance of your loopback statement, all you've said it the pc checks itself before looking elsewhere, which is fairly obvious.
The addresses mentioned above however are no routable on the internet. the firewall does the translation for you, hence you can't get to my PC as its is secure but still has internet access.
