Im in the process of sorting my garden in preparation for putting my house on the market next Spring
At the moment, I have a square shaped lawn with a 1.5m border of crap/soil which I want to extend so that the whole area is a level lawn.
The present lawn is in relatively poor condition with bare patches, weeds, etc and the border is just full of soil, stones, weeds, etc
Having read up a little bit on the subject, my plan of attack is as follows:
Apply a layer of weedkiller over the next 7 days to the entire area
After 7 days, cut the current lawn down to a low level, rake over the current lawn and the borders to remove all weeds, stones, crap, etc to leave the borders looking level and the lawn looking weed free
Aerate the law using a garden fork
Cover the whole area with a layer of top soil, using the back of a rake on the lawn to ensure contact with the existing soil between the grass
Apply a covering of starter fertiliser to the current lawn and borders
Apply a layer of grass seed over the current lawn and a thicker layer of grass seed over the bordered areas (currently without lawn)
Rake lightly with a leaf rake to ensure contact with the soil
Water twice a day
Is there anything above that needs changing or adding to :speechles
Actually, the above may be completely wrong so feel free to correct it in its entirety 
Also, any recommendations for:
Weedkiller
Topsoil
Starter fertiliser
Grass seed
Would all be gratefully received :thumb:

Grass will grown on anything as far as I can tell, even though the internet says otherwise.
I've recently laid seed on the pathetic excuse the builders left me, more stones than soil.
I unfortunately had some torrential rain the day after I put the seed down, meaning that lots of it pooled in the low spots. The grass that is growing though looks good, I'm just sticking down some more seed to cover the rest.

I've been told to dig up the existing weed patch (lawn); rotorvate it and mix in fresh top soil, whacker it, put a weed blanket down, couple of inches of top soil and then either sow or lay turf on top of that. Seems like a lot of hassle - concrete it is!!

Can't you level it but some of that sheet stuff down for weeds n turf over top? Seems a whole load easier than all this faffing about with weed killer and planting seeds

This is the other recommendation Ive ahd which seems more straight forward
1 - Cut what grass you have to about 1.5"
2 - Hire yourself a scarifier
3 - Scarify
4 - Apply a good dose of lawn sand , that has all the chemicals,weedkillers you'll ever need and it less than half the prcie of weedkillers
5 - Make sure the lawn sand sits on the broad leaves of the weeds the ammonia in the lawn sands burns the leaves and kills them
6 - If it hasn't rained 2 days after applying the lawn sand , then water it in
7 - Watch in horror as your entire lawn turns black (thats the lawn sand killing the weeds, moss etc etc )
8 - Several days later lightly rake the lawn with a metal rake with fine tines
9 - Overseed with grass seed and water in (not to much water)

Easier to get artifical grass or pave over it.
I hate my grass, it serves no purpose at all, apart from adding some colour in the garden.
