For me its all about the claustrophobia at such high heights. Penned into the cabin, not much room pretty much confined to being squashed into a seat, constant noise of the engines that you think could stop at any moment. If I could sit in the cockpit id be ten times better.
Also there are hundreds of plane incidents but only the crashes with mega deaths get reported, even a small incident would shit the hardened of fliers up, I wouldn't even want to go through that.
The argument that you are x amount more times to crash in your car on the way home is also bullshit, yes the odds are there, but crashing in your car will see you in a barrier or bush, most probably not dead.

I've been in the cockpit for take off and landing and I would say its worse if your scared of flying. You can't see alot.
Yes there are alot of incidents on planes, bird strikes, lightning strikes, engine faliures etc. I've been in a plane when a air pocket has colapsed and its Droped a fair height. Pretty scarey but at the end of the day I always think that pilots want to get to the destination as much as you do but understand its not for everyone.

I find it very safe and rather exciting.
Love the force at which some planes push you back into your seat on take off.
It's not like some daki's are going to brake their plane in front and cause you to rear end them. Much safer than cars, it just means you need to trust your life to a complete stranger.

I'm much happier riding passenger in a plane than in a car. The pilots are more qualified, the planes better maintained etc. Struggling to think of the last time a UK airline had a crash that resulted in passenger fatality, Kegworth '89 maybe?

Unfortunately you cannot override built in instinctive fear with reasoned logic. I try that everytime I get on a plane and every time I vow never to do it again.

I get planes regularly and will do plenty of times in the future. In fairness when I'm on one I don't really give a shit but regardless I'm aware it isn't a natural thing for a human to be doing, flying at speed at altitude in a man made sardines can.

I detest flying but it wouldn't stop me from getting on a plane...

Sure there are fewer deaths per mile in planes also.
Probably holds true per journey if you factor out going to shops and just compare driving to a holiday destination vs flying to one.

Loganair have had a few but all smaller craft in more remote airfields.

If Microsoft made plane computers...
Engine 2 has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of transporting passengers, the people on the plane might be lost.
Pleas tell Microsoft about this problem.

It's ~ four in five flights, depends on airlines, are autopiloted takeoffs and landings.

As long as it's coded correctly (done a bit of Ada in uni) then I'd trust the computer more with the take-off and landing than the pilot anyway.
