When's this likely to be available through standard MS updates?

Just got round to installing this.

Word of warning, doing an upgrade only allows you to keep the personal files, everything else (programs), it dumps into an old windows.old folder (slightly annoying).

I didn't test the 8.1 preview, so im still finding out whats different.
When I heard the Start menu is back, I was very please, however, its simply a button that takes you straight to the metro interface so ive had to install the start is back for Windows 8.1

They've repeatedly made that clearer than clear since they first announced it.

So far I've not benefitted from anything of note, just an annoying bug which is a big arrow saying "Swipe in from the Left to switch windows".

I would, but my screen isn't a touchscreen and clicking/dragging with the mouse does fuck all - it's just stuck there

There is absolutely nothing wrong with no start button after you've used it for 5 minutes.

I'll probably hold back on the install because it's basically a new install isn't it. Not got the downtime available on my work one.

I feel the start menu is slow and clunky when using W7, got used to W8 even if it was a bit of a learning curve, and it feels more efficient now.

I'm not sure tbh about the "new install" thing. I did get the option of retaining personal files etc as you used to do with an OS upgrade and I do indeed have a windows.old folder.... but all of my applications are still installed and are in the C:\Program Files rather than C:\windows.old\Program Files etc, it's as if it's not a new install at all.
