My policy states;
Driving other cars
We will insure you whilst you are driving any other car within
Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the
Isle of Man providing:
1. The car does not belong to you or is not hired to you under
a hire purchase agreement.
2. You are driving the car with the owner’s express consent.
3. You still have your car and it has not been damaged
beyond cost effective repair.
4. You are aged 25 or above, at inception or last renewal
of this policy.
5. Your certificate of motor insurance indicates that you
can drive such a vehicle.
Important Note: the cover provided whilst you are driving
any other car is for Third Party only
It uses the word car, but i'm wondering if i could drive a small car derived van as i cant see anywhere it stating that it excludes vans?

It won't be for commercials . A car derived van is still commercial . Stop ducking and diving

Nope you're not allowed to. I had a run in a few years ago after I borrowed a Berlingo van from my Grandad. I was 3rd party it's not on vans, got pulled and the copper felt sorry for me and if I got my Grandad to come and drive it away he would say no more. So don't try it, you could end up with 6 points

I can believe it about vans I guess, but I'm not convinced about the L200, not when it's a private vehicle and a stones throw away from being a car anyway. It's not like I'm using it for anything other than private.

Can you not insure l200's/navaras on a normal car policy then?

Don't know the answer to the above but for taxation purposes they are considered a commerical vehicle.

Not sure on how it works with l200's etc but my mrs's dad has a ford ranger and single cab ones are all considered commercial vehicles but crew cabs are considered private.

If the pickups are classes as commercial(which I think most are for some sort of tax dodging) then you won't be allows to drive them.

Every insurance policy is different, you need to ring them and check.
Also all these people talking about van insurance, have you actually insured a van?
Van's DO NOT have to be insured on a commercial policy, therefore NCB can be transferred from a van to a car and also on cetainly polices a van (for personal use) can be covered as "other vehicle" under 3rd party cover.
I have had a LDV Cub and a Renault Traffic(Ambulance Body) both insured as personal use (not commercial use) vehicles and moved my NCB from car to them and back to a car policy.
Bottom line, ring you insurance & check.

I'd check to see what their definition of "car" is. Will be in the small print somewhere.
