Not necessarily a main dealer, but any, like Evans Halshaw, Cargiant etc

Say you buy a car with a new 12 month MOT that they have stuck through their on site place, doesn't matter what car or what price etc.

Hypothetically, if you took it to a VOSA garage the same day you bought it and got it retested and it came back with a list of stuff you weren't informed about or just happened to get missed off the advisories, what sort of come back do you have?

This is a real noob question I am aware but at the grand old age of 25 going on 26 I have never ever bought a car from a retailer, always privately

I've always wondered this to, what stops them passing it and putting no advisories as looks better when being sold. No help I no but always thought the same.

Only time this has crossed my mind was when my Dad bought my Sis her first car, an old 206 from a Renault dealer.

I looked into it and found the on-site MOT'er was actually independent and had nothing to gain from cheating in fear of losing his VOSA license or whatever.

I'd imagine the wrath of VOSA (particularly for a big name franchise) is more important than faking the odd MOT.

Danny, i've only ever bought one car from a dealer and that was a new one, so no need to feel like a noob Sir.

I wouldn't want to buy a car from a dealer though.

MOT is only approved for the day its passed, beyond that there is no guarantee if it fails.

However, Sale of Goods Act would dicatate ni e times out of ten its unfit for use/purpose (cant remember exact wording) so they would have to rectify issues, refund or indemnify your loss.

First car you bought from a non-franchised dealer had a fresh MOT.

Trouble is one tyre was on wrong way around.



But if you read MOT small print etc it is technically only valid for that moment in time, so unless it was something massively dangerous, I wouldn't worry.

Yea it's purely hypothetical,I've only just bought my next car (from an auction, so no come back whatsoever ) but was thinking for the next one...

All down to if the tester is willing to I know no one in my work would pass a unroadworthy car for the sales department and in most cases would prefer to fail them with a huge expensive list

Wavertree Car Centre sold me a Mondeo with a fresh MOT the day I picked it up. Drove it home 3 miles and then 3 miles to the taxi test centre and it failed on a decent list of things, took it back to them and they sorted everything and it passed the retest. Was still fuming that it happened though.

When a technican is doing an mot they are working on behalf of vosa not for the garage, if that car go's out and is in a fatal crash due to something being missed then its them who will be jailed/fined not the garage. So as said unless the tech is an idiot and willing to put dodgy mot's on stock cars then it shouldn't really happen. I know the ones in my work are very thoroughly checked and if there are advisorys there marked down and if sales don't like it that's there problem
