My sister and her boyfriend have just bought a Vauxhall Vectra Elegance with the 2.2i engine.

It has full service history and only 61,000 from new so looks like it has been looked after.

But I recall there being an issue with the double chain on the 2.2 engine - is there a recall or fix they should look out for?

Don't think the common 2.2 Chain issues affect the Vectra C... I believe it was the earliest version of the engines found in the Vectra B etc that suffered most.

Could be wrong mind.

No, no issues with the car, as far as I know.

Just didn't know if there was a recall or unofficial fix/upgrade they should be looking out for?

Standing in front on the engine, look to the top left corner of the rocker cover area. Feel down the back for the chain tensioning bolt. If it has a flat head bolt, then worry, if it has like a domed head bolt, then worry not so much.

Its been a while since i dabbled with the 2.2's, but iirc, the earlier tensioner bolts had a smaller hole for the oil to circulate through, compared to the newer tensioner with a larger hole.

I wouldn't worry too much on a FSH car, but then you would also want to know if the correct grade oil was used at the correct intervals etc.

Mine went at 100k and my brothers was on 140k+ when he sold it, on the original parts. It lasted to about 160k when it eventually went.

When you say went, do you mean snapped? Seized?

Might just let her get on with it

Chain stretches then starts rattling, then snaps. I caught mine in time when it started rattling, drove it home 1 mile, then parked up and fixed it. Some aren't so lucky.

Plastic chain guides are also known to break up.
