Better than Carroll IMO but I'm slightly biased
And he can take a penalty

I agree he's a better all round player, but he will only ever come on when they need physicality. And he's not as good in that situation.

Baines is better than Gibbs but I'd be inclined to agree about taking him before Shaw.

Gibbs not in squad or standby. WTF!!

Flanaghan can play both sides, granted but Gibbs is twice as good.

Vidic's nose aside, he simply is not as physical as Carroll
Edit: that's not to say that I dislike Lambert, as he's a good player. Pretty good brain for the typical big target man. Either he or AC is a good player to bring on to ruffle feathers at the back when that sort of player is needed, but I think Carroll is more of a handful. The best ariel defenders the PL has to offer simply can't handle him. Two, three or four players surrounding him still struggle like buggery.

Someone made the point that we actually have a really good set of penalty takers in this team for a change.

Re. lambert and carroll, IMO you take carroll purely for a last ditch option and I think lambert is better for that... tall and physical too, better finisher and can smash a penalty in like no one else (odds on him missing the decisive penalty in the 2nd round/QFs) whereas carroll just has pure physicality

Did anyone catch the Sky News reporter answering a question from a viewer

Reporter reading out the question "Is John Terry in the England Squad for the World Cup"

[footage cuts over to a picture of the defenders selected]

Reporter "... as you can see, he's not selected, but no doubt he'd crop up if they win"

I'm sure I didnt miss hear her say that!!

Don't disagree with that. Lambert is the better all round player, but I have an irrational love/appreciation of the big lad
Balotelli has missed penalties; so if AC loses a header, all that is right with football will be lost.

yeah that's my point, yet the same players who smash pens in the PL week in week out more often than not choke in WC. Lamberts record is outstanding but the rest are all more than capable of choking (or slipping over)
