Daughter wants to go to the natural history museum for her birthday so rather than paying £400+ for train tickets from home can anyone recommend a station along the M4 route into London that I'm likely to be able to park at midweek?

You can at Windsor if you don't mind a little walk into town to catch the train.

Anywhere along the Piccadilly line, ie: Boston Manor - still a 40min trip to South Kensington though. Or take the line from Maidenhead, switch at Paddington for the Circle to South Kensington.

Park around Chesterfield road/Staveley Road W4.

Cross over the A4 and get the tube in from Chiswick Park. Its then one train in on the District Line.

I always park there if going into London as its free to park that side of the A4 and takes about 10-15mins to walk to tube station, plus after you have the High Street in evening to get something to eat/drink.

I would probably just park in reading then get the train 30 mins into London. Driving and parking anywhere in London always takes a while with traffic etc.
