1.3's wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.
1.7's are awesome if you look after them. WTer leaks are stupidly common on them. Especially the pipe that runs under the thermostat housing. And The thermostat housing gasket itself falls to bits.
Intercooler/aircon radiators rub through the actual radiator.
And for some reason the front engine lift eye always always snaps in the same place. Even if it's never been used to lift before!

As above. The 1.3 engines are good. Just dog slow.

If you do what Gary says and go for a Citroen or anything like that. Do not but the 1.6 tdi. Nothing but coke and turbo problems. Terrible terrible terrible engines.

I'd go for a 1.7 combo tbh. Boss engines. Go forever. Just leak water is all.

The 1.7 I had was great. Had the problem with the waterpipes leaking but they're not difficult to get at. Managed to get 64 mpg out of it on a run to Swansea and back last week. 65 the whole way with cruise control on. For a combo Deffo 1.7, had a 1.3 and it was quite nippy until you put any amount of weight in the back

Friend of mine had a 06 Mazda 1.6hdi. Had to replace the turbo the other week. The whole engine was coked to death. And he looks after his
A taxi driver of ours had a Citroen something 1.6hdi and the turbo went a year or so ago and his was the same inside.
There known for just coking up and killing turbo's.

You must just be pretty lucky mate

Love my 1.7 CDTI Combo Nippy as hell for a van! Mines done 155k and I regularly carry near its max payload with no problems. The only main problem I had with mine was the Suction control valve which is really common from what I've heard. Causes cold start stalling/hunting. My dip stick also rotted off but thats about it

Think there is some confusion in this thread.

The early 1.7 combo's are none common rail and old isuzu tech diesel engines.

1.7 Di is none turbo
1.7 Dti is turbo
These are cheaper to insure.

The later 1.3 cdti engine is the fiat common rail diesel and IMO a much better engine. more powerful and economical.

There is also the later model 1.7cdti

These are pretty rare and dealers often incorrectly list earlier 1.7 none common rails as cdti.

The proper 1.7 cdti has 5 stud wheels and 100hp. This is a cracking engine and the one to go for. really nippy as already stated and a very strong engine.

My wife has the 1.3 I can't fault it at the moment, it's done around 95k and can do 66mpg.

We have a 1.7 combo van at work and it's pretty poo, I don't know if the later ones are any better.

I owned a 12v as my first car (8 years ago) so my recollection is a little vague

It's still painfully slow but does its purpose for me, which is being brilliant on fuel as a daily driver balancing out the toy being terrible
