Any ideas what it could be?

It could be your valve stem oil seals. When you park up and leave it, oil will leak past them into your pots and then when you start the car it wil burn the oil of and hence black smoke for a few seconds and oil in the exhaust.

if the smoke is just on startup then its prob stem seals (as above) but if its cummin out blue when u drive as well then it cud be piston rings - if im wrong then some1 correct me cause im no expert, just what ive ben told before.

stem seals can be with both problems... more likely stem seals than piston rings.

either way the head has to come off
get a gasket set which will come with stem seals head gasket etc... if your car is a 16v it will cost more to fix than an 8v for obvious reasons

My GSi did this.It also gave off a big puff of blue smoke when you thrash it,then it started spitting oil out the exhaust. It was using a litre of oil every 100 miles. Check your oil level to see if it is using any?
