What are the rules about down shifting into the turbo zone while driving a tdi? Not sure if I should be doing it or not.
Also
I find I get dump valve noise if I press throttle hard to get turbo on. Then just before the end of turbo zone I change gear or let off throttle and you get dump valve noise.

dump valve noise is normal, do away with all the boxes and cat and it sounds even better
