Always have at least a development and production environment, don't be a cowboy.

There are tools which let you easily replicate the live WordPress database to your development environment, but they seem quite expensive when you can just dump the database to file and import it locally.

Very easy and quick to do.

Export Live DB
Empty test DB
Import into test DB.

Should take less than a minute to do.

Or for even more awesomeness, use a flat file CMS so your content is kept under your version control system
