They accepted cars in pretty much any condition in exchange for 2k which was probably a lot more than what they were worth at the time. If my fucked r5 was worth 500 and someone offered me 2k, I'd dare take the money.

The whole PH thread missed the point, they were obviously worth 500 quid so you'd take the 2 grand, but project that forward five years, its a loss to motoring.
Not even sure of the economic benefits - most people bought Kias didn't they?

The figures for new cars sold went through the roof. It was a massive boost to a car industry that was on it's arse at the time.

Incredibly difficult to find the breakdown of what was bought, but -
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8135717.stm
BMW - 160 - MINIs or 4 cylinder engines
Fiat - 1,743 - no UK car production
Ford - 2,066 - probably some engines but no car production in 2009?
Honda - 813 - Civic and Jazz in Swindon
Hyundai - 3,042 - no UK car production
Kia - 1,321 - no UK car production
Nissan - 1,662 - Micra, Qashqui, Note in Sunderland
Peugeot - 715 - no UK car production
Suzuki - 916 - no UK car production
Toyota - 2,586 - Avensis, Auris in Burnaston
So from that, 9800 cars do not have a UK plant. Of the other brands, a proportion of those cars would not have been assembled in the UK either.
15k cars on the list so only 35% may have been built here if they were the models that this country produces.
Admitted the UK does have some supply chain interests, but this is not a wholemeal scheme to assist the UK. I would guess - and I've no data because I can't find it - that a good proportion of the money went overseas and boosted other countries' economies.
I expect the scrap all went abroad as well, so that looks like its going to help the trade deficit until you realise that we already bought all the stuff 10 years prior for far more money.

Would have been rusty wrecks. Very few of the desireable models would have been good ones.

Surely they would have been worth quadruple that in parts?

You can buy a whole working one for 8k so I doubt it.

Of course they were shit - that's why people took the 2k - and they'd sup up restoration money and be never be worth what you spent fixing them - but you'd have the option of preserving some history.
