I've got £2k for the vehicle. It must be a 3 door. Petrol / Diesel doesn't matter. Will only be used at the weekend so if it does 10 MPG, no real problem. No to the Disco's as they'll have 200k plus and need lots of welding.

Ones I can think of,

Suzuki Grand Vitara
Vauxhall Frontera

Anyone got any other suggestions?

Here's my last off roader....

The Mrs wanted a 3 door and I know SWB would have less chance to get is belly stuck on the ground.

Plus if going though deep water, less places for the water to come in.

I see. Few years back me and a mate bought a dihastu sportrak for a bit of cheap offroading fun, and could not believe how capable it was with a half decent set of nobbly tyres on it.

At our local off road centre it manage to go all the places the defenders and disco's were going.

Hopefully I'll not be going too deep.

My Cherokee was the same. I just fitted BFG's to it and it was fantastic. I did get stuck where other people with 35" tyres had made big groves and my 28" tyres (measured them) couldn't cope with.

Buy Steve's Defender off him and show it what it's missing.

From experience Steve, you can't go wrong with a nice straight SJ 410/13, or if you want something bigger and more comfortable a SWB Landcruiser.

Short wheelbase shogun I bought one a few years ago £350 from a friend. Should be able to get a decent one for 2k. There's the jimnys n all the small off roaders but I don't rate those. Considered a pick up?

Subaru justy or fiat panda flat out through the mud imo. Much better than just purposely trying to articulate axles or getting one wheel on a big rock and then reversing off it.
