Renaissance 57 - park ave, ok hotel but better available
Grand Hyatt; best out the 3 and on 42nd so central
Anywhere between 38th and 57tj will be central and also between park ave and 6th ave

Staying at the Sheraton Times Sq this year
Anything Times Square will be good but expensive and you spend little time at the hotel but location allows you to fit more in

I stayed at Holiday inn express Madison square gardens. It's on 29th, 10/15 min walk from Times Square.
How long are you off for?
Personal opinion, if your going to see sights/shopping (same reason me and the Mrs went) don't spend a fortune on a hotel. We was up and out for 8/9am and out till late ish in the evening. Literally used it to sleep and freshen up.
Also don't waste money on the open bus tour "hop on/off" we used it once for 20 mins and realised traffics that busy it's quicker to walk everywhere. We walked from 29th down to the Heliport to do the helicopter tour, only took around an hour.
And to walk the other way upto Central Park was around 30/40 mins.
We also did top of the Rockefeller centre and top of Empire State Building. (One in day one in night) as said the helicopter tour, over Statue of Liberty, Yankee stadium etc. and went to see a show and radio city music hall. Was the rockettes Christmas thing, was early December we went. Was a really good show.
Can't remember how much exactly it was for the trip. But think we spent near on £4k in 4 days shopping/food/tours and including the hotel/flights.

Get subway tickets. But like the Oyster card. So much quicker than walking everywhere and it's cheap you can get one cars and load it for both of you.

I don't recommend hiring a car, scary as fuck driving there! Especially when you drive into another state in the snow

I stayed at Novotel as well in Oct'13. Good location, awesome rooftop terrace bar looking straight down Broadway.
