This is for my brother... first smartphone and I'm not used to Android at all! Tried to help over Skype but haven't got anywhere.

So it says no SD card detected, but he doesn't have an SD card! Swiped away the notification and it keeps coming back. Any ideas? It's driving him bonkers

exactly. Probably doesn't have enough internal storage to store stuff.

He has nothing installed, this is a brand new phone. Some cheap Lenono thing...

You don't expect to keep being told the same thing. For instance before he got his SIM card, it said no SIM card... obviously, but he cleared the notification and it never came back. This one keeps coming back.

Lenovo? Do you know the model number? And/or version of Android it's running (Settings > About Phone)?

Firstly, i'd make sure it's up-to-date (be under Settings then either Updates or under About Phone) and then within the Settings > Storage, make sure 'Internal Storage' is selected. Failing that, stick a cheap small SD card in the device

It does sound like a bodged variant of Android though, unless the device really requires external storage to be operational but i just can't see that being the case.

Thanks mate, finally got my hands on it today!

It's a Medion E4506 running 5.1 which is fully up to date (auto updates are on) also, internal storage is indeed selected (with 3.5Gb free space) SD card area is greyed out.

Running out of ideas now!
