I want to check for a spark. Reading online it either says to stick a screwdriver in one of the leads and hold close to the bodywork and look for a spark, alternatively put an old/replacement plug in and check.

Why does it have to be an old/replacement plug? Why can't I use a current one for the check then screw it back in afterwards?
