Depends if they're competing on power alone or a few brake shy is compensated by better equipment or a lower price.

Surely it would need in the region of 192bhp to compete, especially as Clios aren't exactly renowned for their heavy build?

that would be far to logical andy

Yeah - suppose they'll have more mid-range torque than a N/A 192bhp engine. But don't ya wish that just sometimes, Vauxhall would say 'to hell with it', and produce something really crazy?

Oh and taken from vaiuxhalls site:

Initially rolled out on the highly popular VX220 and Monaro, the VXR team at Pentagon believe the Corsa, Astra, Tigra, Vectra, Zafira, Meriva and Signum will all be given the full VXR treatment. The three-door Astra VXR will be the next to arrive in spring 2005 boasting at least 240bhp. It is likely to be followed by Vectra, Zafira and Signum VXRs with upwards of 250bhp, and Corsa, Meriva and Tigra versions with as much as 175bhp.For a personal introduction to the VXR brand, visit the website or call Pentagon on the Internet Sales Line on Freephone 0800 0857296.

Vauxhall have also promised their will be a VXR varient of every single model in the range inside three years. The funding is available.

The Astra VXR will be the fastest FWD production car that money can by - so stands them in good stead.

Ref the Clio comment - 192bhp vs 180bhp turbo power - think of the upgardes that would be available and on the road there wouldnt be alot in it anyway.

Yeah thats why up untill the focus was released, im pretty sure it was the UK's best selling car .

There seems to be loads of speculation about there being a "hot" Corsa C. One report i read was that they'll introduce it for the models last 12 months, so it can go out with a bang, like they did with the MK IV Astra GSI. The Corsa C is only 5 years old. Thats not particularly old in the scheme of things, so i'd imagine it to still be aruond for another 2 years. Theres still time to introduce a better model, but like whats been said, they may feel theres no market for it, especially with the new astra VXR being released.

Is that the DC5, thats is import only, and so wouldnt have been considered to be a direct contender as such in the market place?

I thought so .

Totally and utterly wrong im sorry to say.

Speaking to kevin wale who is the VXR brand manager the vauxhall / opel performance market has seen a total shift.

opel have not found good fortune with "performance" over there... but in the uk its really took off.

The VXR brand is huge for Vauxhall the allocation of monaro's both normal and VXR varients sold out in weeks - the same for the Astra VXR as well the allocation is near enough gone.

Vauxhall is very focused on performance and the normal astra "base" cars are reported to be the best in class.

The huge increase in Vauxhall commerical sales has helped and now Vauxhall are number 1 in the UK - GM vauxhall's owners have taken notice and pumping real money into it to keep it there.

The Corsa Story.

Vauxhall in conjuction with OPC bulit both 2.0 turbo and 1.6 turbo units.
The 2.0 was not cost effective and standard it ran 13.7 seconds 1/4 mile.
The 1.6 was not far behind.

Vauxhall are being very very careful to get this right because all of the above good work could be undone.

The finished car is believed to have in the region of 180bhp whatever the displacement - to compete with its main rival the CLIO 192 due next year.
It will wipe the floor with the fiesta ST and nothing else HATCHBACK comes close to the clio at the moment in the SAME CLASS.

They are the facts

184bhp, 174lbs ft.
