I was changing gear at about 1500 rpm on the way to the garage today as i didnt want it to overheat

Agreed with above.
Best way to save fuel is basically to keep the revs in every gear between 2000-3000rpm. Pickup speed slowly with li8ght acceleration, and under de-acceleration, be light with the brakes and let the engine gradually decrease its rpm as opposed to stamping on the brakes.
Thats pretty much the only way u can get optimum performance from normal every day driving. And of course, motorway driving helps.
My old 1.4 16v engine managed 430miles to a tank of fuel. That was even coming back from a Corsa meet and having a few plays down the motorway. All the way to Cornwall i stuck at 65-75mph (night time).
Was well impressed.
New engine, pah, lucky to get 250miles out of it
